You and Your Brain: New Ways to Unleash Your Creativity

  • You retain facts more easily if you drink ample amounts of water.
  • Never use an overhead projector in the morning; keep the lights on because research shows the brain needs more light early in the day.
  • Standing and pacing occasionally in meetings is better than sitting still for the entire session because that brief exercise will bring more oxygen - and glucose - rich blood - to the brain.

New medical research technology, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Positron Emission Tomography scans, has let scientists gain insights like the aforementioned by seeing the living human brain in action. Based on the analysis of contemporary brain research, educators throughout the nation are using new knowledge to redesign classroom methods. Some are developing innovative programs to help students learn by doing and asking more questions, rather than just listening to lectures. The next time you facilitate a meeting, have your colleagues stand or walk a few paces during the meeting. Within 45 seconds, they will have 15 percent more blood in their brains and they will be better participants.

Within the workplace today, many employees are literally falling asleep at their desks because of venerable old practices that are never questioned. These practices are really "downers" for the brain and mind because they limit the sensory stimulation needed by the brain. New brain research is not just another fad in a field notorious for breakthrough trends. We know for sure that the brain responds to novelty and incongruity. And yet the "normal" work routine perpetuates more patterned thinking that creates the ruts out of which many employees find no escape.
